Breakfast at Southside
They say that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and at Southside we try to reflect this. In an age when breakfast is often a rushed affair squeezed in between other tasks at an especially (for some) stressful time – it is pleasant we think to take time over nice food to welcome the new day.
The dining room at Southside is the hub of the house. A large room with a high Victorian corniced ceiling and bay windows overlooking the little front courtyard and beyond it Newington Road. There are fine reproductions prints by artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. The original Victorian fireplace is still there and on colder days the stove it is lit up. The individual tables are set up with crisp white linen and interesting cutlery.
We take great care to ensure that each day guests are presented with an interesting and varied choice of food. We source as many items as possible from Scotland and freshness and quality of the ingredients is very important. The cold buffet presents fruit juices, bakery items, cheeses, selection of fresh fruits, quality muesli and dry fruits and other goodies. The cooked selection offers the traditional British (Scottish) Breakfast with its Vegetarian/Vegan equivalent, Smoked Salmon with scrambled eggs and each day to add to the choice a Daily Special is also offered which can be Haggis, French toast, Venison Sausages and several others. Lynne insists on cooking everything at the time and hopefully this reflects on the freshness of the food served. Good coffee (including cappuccino from a vintage San Marco machine!) and a wide selection of Teas complement the food. Bubbly in the form of Cava and Orange Juice is also on offer.
And of course the full selection of breakfast is inclusive in your room rate and there are no extras.
As you have gathered we are quite proud of Southside Breakfast, particularly so since many guests over the past decade have told us how much they have enjoyed it. We hope you will too!
